The View from Here February 8, 2011

Last week I spend 3 days up north at our cabin. We have not had our driveway plowed, so I had to snowshoe in about 200 yards or so. The snow was about 3 feet deep on the level, and I sank down a good foot, which made my first trip in a challenge.  It was 7 degrees when I arrived, but I got the wood fire started in the stove, and the kerosene heater going, and after several hours it had warmed up to 50 + degrees.

There is something that amazes me about being up there in the winter, with so much snow on the ground. There seems to be a “hush” in the air, perhaps the blanket of snow, makes everything quieter.  Even in the darkness of a winter night, the snow brightens up the woods, and the stars, on a clear night shine so brightly that one could almost count them.

The thing for me about being there, is that it gives me a time to read and reflect; to pray and meditate; and to enjoy the creation that God has made. Even as basic as our cabin is, it provides a space to be away from the rush of daily life, and to get away from the noise and clutter of TV and other media–just me, God and the woods.

I am grateful for so many things, but most of all I am grateful for the love of God, and the gift of grace through the Son, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit who sustains me day by day.

Grace and peace,
