Last weekend Sue and I  attended our “All Church Retreat” at Clearwater Forest.  What a wonderful time it was.  We had time for worship, singing (a lot); meditation; exercise and of course, we ate–much more than any of us needed.

One of the best things about the retreat was the time that we were able to spend in conversation with each other. There were one to one conversations; group conversations; some people talked while walking or cross country skiing. Other conversations took place while meals were being prepared in the kitchen.

Most of us have way too many things going on in our lives, so having a couple of days during which we could “kick back” and just “see what would happen” without a tight schedule was a delight for most.  It provided us with an opportunity to reconnect with each other, and to commune with God in different ways.

I was reminded again that the church of Jesus Christ is community.  It is something bigger than me, or my family.  It is a community of people brought together by a common faith in Jesus Christ.  It is a community of people who care for one another, and who share concern for others beyond themselves.

I was impressed by the variety of people gathered together.  I think we pretty much covered just about all points of the political and theological spectrum.  There was a genuine appreciation for, and interest in, each person.  In our polarized culture today, that is an uncommon quality to find in any congregation. What a treat that was.
