The View From Here May 18, 2011

It’s been about a month since my last posting. It was Holy Week. Since then, as most of you know, I’ve had a hip replaced, and have been recovering from that.

It has been an interesting experience to go through this. Recovery has gone well, but it’s a day by day kind of experience too. Each day has rituals of doing exercises in bed to strengthen my leg and hip–before I get up for the day. I find that doing those exercises right away, loosens the hip and muscles up and reduces pain/discomfort. Then there is breakfast with med’s–pain meds, and I have learned that staying ahead of the pain is a whole lot better than trying to catch up later. Being “macho” really doesn’t help. So every 4 hours it’s time for the pain meds.

Walking is also one of the key things I need to do everyday–not long walks–but each day, a little farther than the day before. Walking in the morning, walking in the afternoon, and walking in the evening…all helps build strength.

The reasons behind this medical condition can be any- such as prior injury, effects of other no prescription sildenafil diseases such as high blood pressure issues and abnormal cholesterol levels in the body. As I reflect on recovery, I also think about my spiritual life. Just like my morning exercises for my hip, spiritual exercises of reading and prayer set the tone for my day. Spiritually if I don’t work out, I will not gain strength, and will become a “spiritual invalid.” Both physical and spiritual recovery take effort and discipline. There are times when it is much easier (and painless) to sit and not move (or read/pray etc.). But too much of that stifles growth and improvement. Movement is good, and a lack thereof is not good. Spiritually I have to discipline myself to do (read, pray, meditate and think of others). It’s much easier just to focus on myself, and be content with sitting still.

Isaiah wrote, “Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength, they shall mount up on wings as eagles, they will walk and not be weary, they will run and not faint.”

Both physically and spiritually, I want to be able to improve and get stronger. Like the Blue Cross/Blue Shield add says “Do/Move.”
