A Word from Mary E.

Lent. What is it all about anyway?  Giving up a bad habit for 40 days? A good excuse for losing weight before Spring? It is even something Presbyterians recognize? Here’s what our denominational website has to say,  “The season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the  resurrection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days – like the flood of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah’s call to Ninevah to repent and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness.”

So, in keeping with this season of repentance and self- examination, RHPC will be reading through a daily devotional together entitled “Finding Life: A Journey through 1 John” by Peter John Schrock. The books are on order, but we have been authorized to hand out xerox copies to use until the books arrive, so we can all begin together with Day 1 on Ash Wednesday, Feb 13th. The sermons during this time of Lent will also focus on the book of 1 John. In this way we will share the experience of considering a couple of verses each day, along with a short reading and some thought provoking questions that delve into our personal relationship with Jesus. I have previewed the book and found it to shed light where light needs to be shed in my walk with God. So, be sure to pick up a copy at church BEFORE Feb 13th, or you can down load portions of the book yourselves at this link:
